Abstract

Cigarette is not any more favorite food, and nicotine is one of addicting drugs. Despite of adverse health effects due to cigarette smoking, there are several factors(i.e. social, psychological, genetic, biological) that make smoking behavior initiate, maintain, relapse. Cigarette smoking is diagnosed and classified as ¡®mental and behavioral disordrs due to use of tobacco¡¯ and as ¡®nicotine-related disorders¡¯ in ICD-10, and as ¡®nicotinerelated disorders¡¯ in DSM-¥³. The prevalence of smoking is higher in psychiatric patients than the general population, and nicotine dependence can be considered as a kind of chronic relapsing illness. Because nicotine dependence is as complex in its components and determinants as other addictions, more comprehensive multicomponent treatments may be required for the achievement of successful abstinence. Because of above background, we reviewed psychiatric aspects of references about cigarette smoking to established guidelines of smoking cessation program.
